Simone Weil's 105th birthday seems like a good day to celebrate the film's DVD and streaming release on iTunes, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Best Buy, with more to come!


Go see the film at the Hoffman Center in Manzanita, Oregon, this Saturday, November 23 at 7:30 PM, discussion and refreshments to follow.

March 5, 2013 -- A new translation of Simone Weil's "Waiting for God" and "Letter to a Priest" is now available in paperback, it includes a 13-page intro by Sylvie Weil (Simone's niece) entitled "Simone Weil and the Rabbis: Compassion and Tsekekah" that addresses the question of Weil's resistance to Judaism.

Dec 17, 2010 -- An Encounter with Simone Weil inspired a debate on responding to human suffering in the 21st century. The panel moderated by Women Make Movies' Debra Zimmerman included Julia Haslett (An Encounter with Simone Weil), Shane O'Sullivan (Children of the Revolution), Marius van Niekerk (My Heart of Darkness), Seong-Gyou Lee (My Barefoot Friend), and Andrea Roggon (Soy Libre).

An Encounter with Simone Weil Sold Out at World Premiere

Nov 19, 2010 -- Director Julia Haslett presented the final cut of her film for the first time before a sold out audience at IDFA's Tuschinski, the Art Deco theater on Reguliersbreestraat. During the Q and A, questions focused on empathy, our individual as well as humanity's response to suffering. One audience member asked what Weil book she should read first. Julia's response was that starting with The Simone Weil Reader was probably best, but that Opression and Liberty and Gravity and Grace were among Weil's classics.

Nov 25, 2010 -- An Encounter with Simone Weil will take part in the third annual IDFA Debates.

DocuClub Screens An Encounter with Simone Weil

On Wednesday, October 20, 2010, Arts Engine's DocuClub screened An Encounter with Simone Weil to a full house at DCTV. The aim of the screening was a departure from the usual DocuClub work-in-progress format in that the audience was asked to reflect on audience development. The moderator was Shaady Salehi, Deputy Director at Active Voice, a nonprofit media strategy organization. Working as the intermediary between film producers and NGOs, Shaady specializes in the use of film and media to support long-term social change. Director Julia Haslett and producers Fabrizia Galvagno and Enrico Rossini Cullen were on hand to answer questions.
